The Pittsburg Kansas Japan Karate Federation was started in 1977 as a club
at Pittsburg State University (PSU). The style was Shito-Ryu under Shihan
Fumio Demura. Sempai Dean Heinitz was the first instructor. He was followed
by Sempai David Jones and Mr. Steve Rose. Mr. Randy Buchanan took over
the PSU club and began offering karate as a class through the HPER
department. At the same time, he opened a dojo in downtown Pittsburg,
Kansas in 1986. The dojo and college classes have been offered in both
locations since their inception.
The Pittsburg group is presently directed by James Otter who started at PSU
in 1977. He is the chief instructor and teaches primarily at the main dojo.
Bryan Crismas is the head instructor at PSU and teaches both at the college
and the dojo.
